First Time Papa

Getting Prep for a new Generation

"Syiok" & "Shock"

August5

Gosh, being First time Parent is a tough call. First the “Syiok” then the “Shock”. (*Syiok in the local slang means “exciting & enjoyable exhilaration”)

It was really something, to know that you are becoming a father, the feeling is just immense. However, soon after, the reality sets in and the Syiok becomes Shock (well, not in a bad way, so Honey, don’t get me wrong).

So, there’s all sort of stuffs to study, it’s like I’d just enrolled onto a new course in Uni, and the exam is once every week! =) 40 exams for a full course to graduate as Daddy.

It’s already week 5 when we found out about the pregnancy, so, 5 exams to be taken in one shot.

First of, to understand the anatomy of the pregnancy, the weeks, the terms, the trimester, the nutrition, the foods, the supplemental diets, the “Gu-Leng-Hun” for mums (literal translation : “Cow-Milk-Powder”, basically formulated milk powder), the “pangtang-larang” (meaning custom & taboo practices), the gynecologist, the periodic checkups, the “Klinik Ibu & Anak“, the scans & the untrasounds, the labor locality, the confinement month, the confinement month helper lady, the diapers, the baby formulated milk powder, all the “A“s in the world (DHA, EFA, AA, SA, GA….. my old uni mate whose a straight A student did not have so many “A”s too… I wonder do they have PGA or FIFA or even FIA, RIAA, PIA.. hahaha). Wait, there’s more, still have to look into maternity wear, baby carrying sling (and yes, you’ll see me walking in the Spring with my precious baby strap in front of me), the baby cot (which is a very good hands-me-down from my uncle, thanks uncle Kia), baby toys, baby clothes, baby names, baby care, baby education, nursery, play school, the language to be taught as the first language, the primary education, the friends that my baby is going to make, the secondary school, the curfew and agreements with the kid on when to get into romantic relationships, the university, the graduation, the work-in-the-society, the kid’s marriage arrangement…

Well, that’s the feat ahead, but for now, let’s focus.

Week 5 : OMG! It couldn’t be True!

July20

We’re still reeling from shock since the discovery of my pregnancy on the 18th July.

On that fateful day,my menses had been delayed for 10 days, which shouldn’t be of any concern coz it’d happened in the past. But reacting to some hunch and Jee’s anxiousness of my delayed ‘aunt’, I sneakily bought a Home Pregnancy test kit . (I pick the cheapest off the Guardian’s Pharmacy shelf. Haha! :P)

The next morning, when the house is empty (I was sick thus had stay back at home) I woke up and grogilly grab the kit and read the instructions in my flu-ish daze.
Simple enough, It says :
1 line = Negative (you’re SAFE)
2 line = Positive (you’ve hit JackPot!)
No line = Non-conclusive (go buy another kit and try ur luck again LOL)

So armed with the Kit, I tested myself. (Not expecting anything, but feeling curious about using with a Pregnancy Kit for the 1st time and wondering how that thing works.)

For those of you that have not used this particular kit before, here’s how it works.

- First you collect your urine sample. (Its very efficient and hygienic. They even provide you with a wide rimmed waterproof paper cup and a dripper.)
- Then, extract ur urine from the cup and put a drip onto a hole in the tester (i was more kiasu, I put in 2 drips! :P).
- Then white background will change color and the line will slowly appear in pink from left to right as your urine sample gets absorbed.
THE OUTCOME : O.o*

For my case, when the 1st line appear, I silently told the kit..”OK.. thats it. U’d better stop here.” But much to my dismay..it moved on and on, and Lo~ & Behold~ !
The 2nd line appeared in its Pinkish glory. shining Bright and Clear from the Kit! O.o”

I was flabbergasted when the 2 bright red lines appeared and was in utter shock! In my disbelief I referred to the instruction again n again to make sure my understanding was not misleaded.. and even shake the kit to see if the result will shift.

Hahaha! YES..I was in serious Denial :P

But after pacing around in my room and mulling over what to do.. I decided to call the ‘Dad’ and request him to come home and send me to my GP (since I was sick with flu coincidentally) to get a sick leave for the day. I’d figure that the News will have to wait, it will be as much as a shock to him as it was to me. So I’d better wait till he’s home safely and seated before I break the news to him. :P Who knows.. he might even Faint from shock! And I don’t think I am capable of hauling my 100+Kg of a ‘rhino-hubby’ from the ground in my weak condition. >.< Lesson Learned : Never says NEVER! And ‘accidents’ do happened :P *sigh

But inspite of all that is said..prepared or not.. to Us~ this is our Blessing and Gift from heaven. And we shall treasure and nurture this precious bundle with all we have. ^.^

WELCOME to the FAMILY Little One! :)
